Titration Essays
Titration Essays Titration Essay Titration Essay A trading standards officer suspects that a wholesaler is supplying fish and chip shops with vinegar that has been watered down. The officer has collected several samples of the vinegar from different shops, together with a sample of the same brand of vinegar direct from the manufacturer. My task in this assignment is to analyse the samples by titration and to decide which of the samples, if any have been watered down. I will then prepare a report for the officer showing the extent to which the vinegar samples have been watered down if at all. I was given the manufacturers sample and three other samples to test. The VariablesThe possible input variables are the concentration of the vinegar, the concentration of sodium hydroxide, the amount of vinegar, amount of sodium hydroxide, the amount of phenolphthalein (indicator) and the temperature. My possible outcome variables are the amount of vinegar needed to neutralize the sodium hydroxide and the speed of the reaction. The input variable I have decided to change is the concentration of the vinegar and the output variable I have decided to measure is the amount of vinegar needed to neutralize the sodium hydroxide. My control variables that I will keep the same to make my experiment fair are the amount and concentration of sodium hydroxide, the starting amount of vinegar, the amount of phenolphthalein and the same equipment.PredictionMy prediction is The higher the concentration of vinegar the less vinegar needed to neutralize the solution of vinegar and sodium hydroxide because if the vinegar has a low concentration then it contains a smaller number of moles per litre. So therefore more of the vinegar would be needed to neutralize the sodium hydroxide. If the vinegar was of a higher concentration less of it would be needed to neutralize the sodium hydroxide.Equipment ListBurettePipettePipette fillerConical flaskBeakers x2FunnelClamp standWhite tilePhenolphthalein indicatorSodium hydroxideVinegar samples: manufacture rs, sample 1,2,3Diagram of EquipmentRisk AssessmentI decided to make the experiment safe by wearing goggles at all times and not sitting down while doing the experiment. Also I tried not to spill and liquid or get any on my clothes and skin.Step by Step ProcedureThis is what I did:1. I will get all equipment out that is on the equipment list.2. I will label and fill two beakers with the reacting solutions.3. I will pour a little of the vinegar into the burette to rinse it. Then pour away the solution.4. I will fill the burette with vinegar and then let the solution out until the meniscus is on the zero line.5. Then using a pipette filler I will rinse out the pipette using the sodium hydroxide and then pour it away. Then fill the pipette to way past the line.6. Carefully let the solution out until the meniscus is on the line.7. I will then run the solution into a conical flask.8. I will add 7 drops of indicator and the solution will turn purple and put it on the white tile that is on the clamp stand.9. Run the solution from the burette into the conical flask a bit at a time, swirling the flask all the time.10. Stop when the indicator has changed the solution from purple to clear and note the reading on the burette.11. Empty and rinse the conical flask and then refill and zero the burette.12. Using the pipette filler, refill the pipette and let the solution out until the meniscus is on the line.13. Repeat steps 5, 6 and 7.14. Repeat step 8 but stop about 1cm before the previously recorded volume. Then add the vinegar drop by drop until the solution goes clear.15. Record the volume added in a table.16. Do at least three readings within 0.1 cm of each other for each sample.Scientific KnowledgeEquation for the reaction:Acid + Alkali Salt + WaterSodium Hydroxide + Ethanoic Acid Sodium Ethanoate + WaterNaOH + CH3COOH CH3COONa + H2O1 Mole + 1 Mole 1 Mole + 1 MoleI know that it takes 1 mole of NaOH to neutralize 1 mole of CH3COOH and then you get 1 mole of CH3COONa and 1 mole of H20amount of moles = concentration x volumea = cv= 0.1 x 25/1000= 0.0025 moles of NaOH0.0025 moles of sodium hydroxide and Ethanoic acid are needed each time. The less concentrated the vinegar the smaller the number of moles it will contain per litre so it will therefore take more of the solution to neutralize the solution.Test RunsRun12345Amount of acid needed (cm )272727.126.727.1My test runs were to show me how the equipment was set up and how the experiment worked and what I had to do in the experiment.Recording ResultsI recorded my results in a table but also in a graph. In this graph I have found that the points join up as a curve the graph shows me that the higher the concentration of vinegar the less vinegar needed to neutralize the solution of vinegar and sodium hydroxide. This matches up with my original prediction that The higher the concentration of vinegar the less vinegar needed to neutralize the solution of vinegar and sodium hydroxide. As the volume halves the concentration doubles, for example on my graph the volume is 26 cm and the concentration is 0.10 moles and when the volume is 13cm ,the concentration is 0.20 moles. On the second graph I plotted the axis was volume of vinegar against 1/concentration of vinegar. In this graph I have found that all the points join up to become a straight line. I have found that sample 1, 2 and 3 have been watered down because the concentration for those three samples is lower than the concentration of the manufacturers sample.EvaluationIn my experiment I have completed it fairly, the equipment I used to make it fair was the same volume pipette and burette. This is because they have a line on them and the meniscus of the liquid is on the line so I will be using the same volume of liquid every time. On my first graph the first three points are joined up by m ore of a straight line than the curve that joins the 3rd and 4th points up. To make this more of a smooth curve I could have missed a point out of it to make it smooth. I have enough results to support my conclusion because every result I took was within 0.1 cm of each other. To further my experiment I could react all of the samples with magnesium and then the less concentrated vinegars will react slower.

basic problem that can be seen in (MRP) Material requirement planning
basic problem that can be seen in (MRP) Material requirement planning Exercise 2 Material Requirement Planning for each part and Sub-Assembly a. It has been done in the attached excel sheet. b.Problems The basic problem that can be seen in MRP is the decision that the company should take with respect to procuring a sub-assembly directly or manufacturing it by using the raw materials. It has been seen that even though the lead time of the raw material like rubber face is 10 weeks, it is economical to manufacture the product through it. This is because, there has been enough time given before the first set of demand is predicted by the company. Hence, it is useless for the company in both cases to procure handle assembly or face assembly directly. The standard cost of manufacturing with the given lead times has cost it lesser. Also, one has to keep track of availability of all the materials so that the final product can be manufactured. Hence, maintaining unnecessary inventory to the maximum is the biggest challenge in this entire MRP design. No te: As procuring handle assembly directly costs more than making it through raw materials, hence handle assembly has been made with raw materials taking appropriate lead time and EOQ into account.Ãâà The same concept has been used for face assembly as well in the MRP. c. Alternatives For any further problem that the company identifies, it is appropriate that it is able to analyse the costs of all the sub-parts and sub-assemblies even before the actual forecasting is done. This would not put on into a dilemma as to how to approach the same. Also, the company has given the starting week of sales from week 13 which is far too late. MRP should be done on a closer basis so that none of the days get wasted. Here, we can see that none of the sub-parts required the first or second week of work. At the same time, one has to maintain least possible inventory. Exercise 3 It has been done in the attached excel sheet Exercise 4 It is certain that the average inventory value of the co mpany would increase with the imposition of safety lead time. The reason for the same is that initially it had been planned that while justifying the lead time of all the sub-parts, one would endeavour for least possible inventory. In all the cases, zero-inventory has been maintained over the exercise except for those occasions where there was initial inventory on week 1 itself. Even this has been used judicially so that the company is not left with the inventory once the sales proceeds as predicted by the company management of Psycho Sports. Hence, efficiency on this ground is certain to decrease this way hence raining the average inventory. Also, it is important to note here that while the safety lead time had been imposed, a number of sub-parts where procured to be remained in inventory without having any processing done. This also raises the cost of inventory for the company. But as it brings safety, there is lesser amount of risk involved in keeping the same. The exact values o f the same have been shown in the attached excel sheet. This safety lead time only decreases the dependency on the sales department of the company on achieving the exact sales in the week specified.

Child Psychopathology Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Child Psychopathology - Research Paper Example They are not able to manage the tasks of everyday life and cannot complete work which requires concentration. Children cannot perform very well at school as well and later in life they have difficulties in getting into relationships. Trauma to the brain by accidents and falls as well as exposure to chemicals such as lead during prenatal and early years of life can be counted as causes leading to this disease. Genetic factors also pose as a risk for it. Consumption of alcohol, cigarettes and other chemicals which affect the development of the brain can also create a risk for the infant to suffer from ADHD. A healthy atmosphere at home and educated parents can decrease the risk of developing this psychiatric condition. These people find it very difficult to cope up with the everyday activities and their weaknesses make them susceptible to develop addictions which include alcohol consumption and abuse of the prescription medications as well as other stimulants like caffeine and nicotine . Body: Being focused on to the important aspects of life is one of the main functions of the brain. In some diseases or disorders this special function of the brain is either lost or diminished. One such disorder which diminishes the functions of the brain is the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. ... vention has also indicated that 8 million children in the United States between the age of 3 to 17 years have been diagnosed by this condition and 11% of the diagnosed cases are boys whereas 4.8% of the diagnosed cases are girls. Thus this disease is more common among children and it has a higher rate of occurrence in boys than in girls. Attention Deficit Disorder is a neuropsychiatric condition in which an individual is not able to concentrate or focus on a single aspect for a longer time. This leads to a lack of attention and it affects activities of an individual in everyday life. This disorder has a genetic predisposition as well as environmental factors play a role in it. Neurotransmitters which help in transmitting signals to and from the neurons are usually affected in this type of disorder which usually affects the chemical functions of the brain. Thus injuries to brain and chemicals which affect brain functioning can result in this disorder. A child who has close relatives a nd siblings suffering from ADHD is at a high risk of developing this condition. As already indicated by the statistics of the Center for Disease Control and prevention boys possess a risk of developing this disorder and they possess a more than two time greater risk of this illness. Damage to the brain through direct brain injury also makes a child more susceptible to have ADHD. Pregnant women, who consume alcohol, smoke and are exposed to other toxins like lead and chemicals that create hindrances in normal brain development may give birth to children possessing very high risks to suffer from this psychiatric condition. Not only this but also children who are exposed to harmful chemicals such as lead are also more vulnerable. This is because these chemicals prevent the normal growth of the

Describe, discuss and explain the significance of the Indian Removal Article
Describe, discuss and explain the significance of the Indian Removal Act - Article Example The Act resulted to Seminole War that lasted between 1835 to 1842, and cost Jackson administration almost 60 million dollars. The law made Cherokees develop their own written language, print newspapers and resist any forceful evictions. The Supreme Court decision asserted that Georgia had no authority over the Cherokees and their lands but the president ignored the court ruling. In 1836, Georgia Militia attacked several Creeks and forced about 15,000 Creeks to move to the West of Mississippi (Stewart, 2007). In 1835, the Treaty of New Echota was signed ceding all Cherokee land for $ 5.6 million and their free transportation to the West of Mississippi. This led to the trail of tears whereby more than 16,000 migrating Cherokees died. The Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creeks, Cherokees and Seminoles travel from their lands was marked with diseases such as Cholera, death from starvation and inadequate food supplies (Stewart, 2007). The Indian removal act gave European American farmers a claim on t he land that was initially occupied by the Five Civilized Tribes and opportunity for intense agricultural activity. Generally, the Indian removal act was oppressive and led to Seminole wars from 1835 to 1842 and trail of tears from 1838 to 1839. The US army troops forced the Indian troops to abandon their traditional lands (Stewart, 2007). The Indian removal act that was signed in to law by President Jackson led to massive federal spending on wars and relocation. Cherokees heavily resisted the law through a court decision by the president chose to ignore the ruling. The Act led to Seminole Wars and Trail of tears whereby many affected individual dies due to wars, disease and starvation (Stewart,

Civilized, Primitive, and the Perceptual Lens Essay
To say that any culture, region, or country is civilized or primitive is purely subjective to the person stating the opinion. Each individual, whether educated or uneducated, will have a different view on the definition of those two terms; a view that is influenced by the perceptual lens, or bias, that the individual has developed through various experiences over their lifetime. Nonetheless, how do subjectivity and the perceptual lens manipulate the terms of ââ¬Ëcivilizedââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëprimitiveââ¬â¢ in relation to the humanities? The answer is as unique as the individual giving it. Subjectivity often refers to the interpretation of an experience by an individual, in contrast with objectivity, which is a knowledge and fact-based belief system. The thoughts or opinions brought on by the experience are what help support the idea of a perceptual lens. Other influences of the perceptual lens can include, but are not limited to: religion, race, gender, environment and education . Because of the bias of an individual, there is a possibility of more than one sharing the same thoughts and opinions on an idea; however, it is difficult to say that two individuals share the same point of view on every aspect of life and society. At this current moment in time, the influence of late twentieth and early twenty-first century American pop culture effects the view many young Americans have on society, whereas the weight of mid twentieth century culture changes the bias of older Americans. It is because of these changes in culture that the terms of ââ¬Ëcivilizedââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëprimitiveââ¬â¢ cannot be given a tangible definition, but merely guidelines as to the form it is supposed to follow. Civilization is often a term so broad that it is easier to refer to a society as being ââ¬Å"civilized.â⬠To be defined as civilized, one must have: a form of urban life, involving the building of permanent settlements; a system of government; distinct social classes, defined by wealth and occupation; specialized skills and tools for the production of goods and the rise of trade; a form of written communication; and a shared system of beliefs whose officials play a significant role in the community (Cunningham and Reich, 3). By using the perceptual lens in conjunction with these guidelines, it can be inferred that to be civilized is a baseline for social groups as well as societies. When thinking of the word ââ¬Ëcivilized,ââ¬â¢ ideas such as fine arts, hygiene, education, history, language and family all help us define the expression, and for each individual the ideas are unique to how they were raised and how they view the world. For those who view civilized through a twenty-first century lens, to be civilized is purely used to make advancements in society and as a tool for survival. In America, we have all the basic distinctions to be defined as civilized, with a few exceptions, such as a singular shared system of religious belief. Yet, it could be said that with the freedom to choose a religion based on your own values and to share those values with others would be in place of a singular belief system. In contrast, to be ââ¬Ëprimitiveââ¬â¢ is to lack all of a majority of the basic distinct ions that reinforce what a society is at the core. Although, to be primitive can also be seen as a lack of survival skills needed to sustain a society. Some thoughts that come to mind with the term ââ¬Ëprimitiveââ¬â¢ are: barbaric, dirty, uneducated, lack of a ruling body or government, and without a written language. However, those thoughts solidify the idea of a perceptual lens, a true subjective view on civilization and how the concept was taken in by an individual. As an advanced society, America has proven itself to be primitive in the way it often treats other nations that refuse to see ideas and beliefs the way in which they are seen here. For example, the countries of Afghanistan, Iran, and Iraq are often viewed as primitive and barbaric nations, due to the constant civil war that rages between religious sects in each region, and as a nation of great influence, America has bullied its way into the system with the goal of changing the social structure of each nation. Yet, all of these countries have the basics standards to be defined as civilized; each has a system of government, a shared belief system, permanent cities, social classes, agricultural and textile trade, and written language. Another example of use of the perceptual lens and the term ââ¬Ëprimitiveââ¬â¢ would be the Neanderthals. Made out to be unintelligible people by all forms of media, Neanderthals were, at that point in time, extremely intelligent. Nearly 200,000 years ago, Neanderthalsââ¬â¢ began to practice elaborate burial rituals, which could be proof of a deeply seated belief in the afterlife of the deceasedââ¬â¢s soul, supporting the beginnings of a spiritual belief system. Thus, a society which is constantly referred to as primitive was actually quite civilized considering the evolutionary advances at the time. Though this is only one view on civilized, primitive, and how the perceptual lens effects the definition of the terms, it is an insight to how subjectivity changes the most basic of information taught to us at an early age. Societies follow the six distinct characteristics that define them as civilized, yet even the most advanced, civilized societies can be defined as primitive in the actions that are made by those who govern over them. 1. Essay about Narrative of Life of Frederick Douglass
Published in 1845, ââ¬ËNarrative of life of Frederick Douglass an American slave written by himselfââ¬â¢ is still the most highly acclaimed American autobiography ever written. It was published seven years after Douglass escaped from his life as a slave in Maryland. It describes his experience of being slave and his psychological insights into the slave-master relationship. The main focus is on ââ¬ËHow he learn to read and write ââ¬Ëand ââ¬Ëthe pain of slavery.ââ¬â¢ The goal of this paper is to bring more insight analysis of his narrative life through the most famous two chapterââ¬â¢s in which he defines, ââ¬Å"How he learn to read and writeâ⬠and ââ¬Å"The pain of slavery.â⬠To achieve this goal, the paper is organized into four main sections. First, author background andâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Analysis Douglassââ¬â¢s Narrative displays how white slaveholders continue slavery by keeping their slaves uninformed. At the time Douglass was writing, many people thought that slavery was a normal state of being. They believed that blacks were naturally incapable of participating in civil society and thus should be kept as labors for whites. The Narrative explains the tactics and measures by which whites gain and keep power over blacks from their birth onward. Slave owners keep slaves uninformed of basic facts about themselves, such as their birth date or their parents. This enforced ignorance deprives children of their natural sense of distinct identity. As slave children grow up, slave owners prevent them from learning to read and write, as learning would give them a sense of self-sufficiency and capability. Slave-masters understand that knowledge would lead slaves to question the right of whites to keep slaves. Lastly, by keeping slaves illiterate, Southern slave-masters maintain cont rol over what the rest of America knows about slavery. If slaves cannot write, their picture of the slavery story cannot be told. Wendell Phillips states this point in his prefatory letter to the Narrative. Just as slave masters keep people as slaves by depriving them of knowledge and education, slaves need to seek knowledge and education in order to track freedom. It is from Hugh Auld that Douglass learns this idea that knowledge should be the way toShow MoreRelatedNarrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglass987 Words à |à 4 PagesLife of Frederick In the ââ¬Å"narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass an American slave written by himselfâ⬠Frederick reveled to audience the time he was living as a slave and the moments of brutal treats for example psychological, emotional and physical abuses.
